Nature reserve series: Is-simar

Ever since the film Luzzu’s history-making debut and win at the Sundance Film Festival, it’s been making waves both on a local as well as international level. The even better news is that the film will be released in theatres in Malta on the 8th of September.

It was shown for the first time in the country during a very special red-carpet event last Friday, just before it’s released in theatres.

The film tells a story of a fisherman who risks absolutely everything to enter Malta’s black-market fishing industry. Luzzu impressed the judges at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and lead actor of the movie, Jesmark Scicluna, a fisherman from Siġġiewi, won the Special Jury Award for his debut acting performance.

Since then, Luzzu, directed by Alex Camilleri, has been an audience favourite and also won awards at prestigious festivals around the world, including the Sofia International Film Festival and New Directors/New Films.

“We hope audiences will be captivated by Jesmark’s moving performance and gripped by this story set in the heart of Malta’s fishing community,” said producers Rebecca Anastasi and Oliver Mallia, as they expressed their excitement at the first theatrical release in Malta.
