Shark tank series to launch in Malta next year

The rumours you heard are indeed true: Malta is launching its very own version of Shark Tank, based on an American business reality TV series, which follows aspiring entrepreneurs and their product pitch to a panel of investors.

In its programme schedule, TVM confirmed that the show will begin airing in April 2022 on Sundays at 9pm, shortly after the third season of the X Factor Malta comes to a close.

What is Shark Tank?

Shark Tank is an American business series, which first premiered in 2009 on ABC. The show is the American franchise of the international format of Dragon’s Den, which originated in Japan as Money Tigers, back in 2001. The show follows aspiring entrepreneurs making business presentations to a panel of five investors, or sharks, who decide whether they would like to invest in their start-up companies or not.

The so-called sharks often find weaknesses and faults in an entrepreneur’s value of their company, product or business model, but if interested, they can make a handshake deal on the show. If all the panel members drop out, however, the entrepreneur leaves empty-handed.

On the American show, the main long-standing sharks are Kevin O’Leary and Robert Herjavec. As the series entered its twelfth season, the main sharks included Barbara Corcoran, Daymond John, Mark Cuban and Lori Greiner, alongside Kevin and Robert, who have been main sharks since the very first season.

Any more details?

What about the Maltese sharks, we hear you ask? Well, no further details have been announced as of yet. With regards to the influence of Shark Tank reaching Maltese shores, start-up competition Pitchora launched last year locally, with the groceries app Grocerly winning first place out of more than 40 applicants.
