Are you looking to break your routine and learn something entirely new? A skill or art that will bring new colour and wonder into your life? If this question resonates with you, the China Cultural Centre in Malta, often referred to as the CCC, may have that unique course for you. The CCC has recently launched a number of courses and lectures based on the Erhu, Traditional Chinese Freehand Painting, Chinese Go, Taichi and Chinese History.

The Erhu

The sweet sounding Chinese traditional instrument known as the Erhu or Chinese violin has a history of over 4,000 years of age. It is a bowed instrument with only two strings yet it is a very expressive instrument that can convey emotions of melancholy, as well as, jubilance. It is versatile with all notes within its range and many say its tone is very similar to the voice of a human being! The Erhu is a very portable instrument and is also suitable for playing in group settings, such as within a quartet, quintet etc. Discover the warm and soulful tones of the erhu by joining our classes. No prior background in music is needed to participate and erhus can be rented from the CCC at a small fee. The class will be limited to 6 people (aged 12 and above) so apply early to avoid disappointment.

Traditional Chinese Freehand Painting

The China Cultural Centre’s Traditional Chinese Freehand Painting classes are being taught by the award winning graphic designer and illustrator, Mr. Joseph Scerri. Mr Scerri follows the Chinese

Four Treasures of the Study” which refers to brush, ink, paper and ink stone. Chinese brushwork painting does not focus on shade and light but rather a clear representation of the subject form.

As early as the fourth century in Chinese history, Chinese painters realised the importance of capturing the spirit of nature. Only when the spirit of a painted matter is firmly grasped can the depiction itself be free and moving

Taiji

Taiji is a low impact and slow motion martial art where you must breathe deeply, calm your mind and move through a series of motions without pausing. It is a graceful form of exercise that is excellent for stress reduction and can be practiced at all ages. In fact, there is a large community of elderly people in Malta that practice Taiji on a regular basis.

The China Cultural Centre has reached out to the top Taiji schools who’s leaders’ incredible spirit and passion inspire so many to pursue Taiji. As the taiji Master Xu Yao who once visited Malta explained: “Taiji is a sport that trains you both physically and mentally. You practise with the fist,

but what you cultivate is the heart. It teaches you to face problems with a clear mind and calmly perceive the changes of life and know how to be kind to yourself.”
