Local Luzzu film selected as Malta’s Oscar contender for Best International Feature Film

Highly-acclaimed Maltese film Luzzu has been chosen as Malta’s contender for Best International Feature Film for the 94th Academy Awards! The trail-blazing feature film has broken record after record, after winning a number of awards, nominations and mentions.

The Malta Academy Selection Committee chose Luzzu as its entry to the awards, which are to take place on 27th March 2022, Alex Camilleri’s film has already won the Grand Prize in the Japanese International Cinema Festival and the protagonist of the story, Jesmark Scicluna, has also won the Sundance Film Festival’s Special Jury Award for his performance.

The Best International Film contenders will be short-listed to just 15 finalists on 21st December of this year, and then down to the final five Oscar Nominees on 8th February.

How does the process work?

Well, the selection panel is made up of 11 local people, who come from a diverse backgrounds related to or within the film industry, including those with skill sets ranging from directing, producing, acting, cinematography and even expertise with Computer Generated Images, as well as academia and film critiquing.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invites every country to submit one film, to compete in the Best International Feature Film Category.

Luzzu illustrates the life of fishermen in Malta and the trials and tribulations of their work, which leads them to resort to the black market trade, in order to maintain their livelihood and for real-life fisherman Jesmark to provide for his wife and newborn baby.
