Russell Crowe back in Malta for new film

The beloved star of Gladiator Russell Crowe is back in Malta and this time, he was spotted with a production crew, who are filming in various locations across the island for the next few days.

According to sources in the industry, the Australian film star is likely going to spend the week in Malta with the team filming Prizefighter, a biopic movie about 19th century pugilist named Jem Belcher.

The actor starred in the Roman epic Gladiator, directed by Ridley Scott in 1999, during which Crow and the production team spent 19 weeks in Malta, with Fort Ricasoli acting as a stand-in for Ancient Rome. Did you know that Crowe went on to win Best Actor Award for Gladiator in the Academy Awards?

According to IMDB, Ray Winstone and Matt Hookings are to star in Prizefighter and Crowe was not previously known to be associated with the film and is, in fact, not listed in its cast as of yet. That being said, his trip to the Mediterranean has been the books for a while, as he took to Twitter in October to ask whether any of his 2,700,000 followers were from Malta.

Yesterday, he tweeted a photo of Filfla and titled it, “Where am I now?”

Crowe was recently filming in Thailand, just two weeks ago in fact, with actor Zac Efron. The pair are to appear in a movie based on the book called The Greatest Beer Run ever, which revolves around the story of Marine Corps veteran John Chick Donahue, played by Efron, who travelled thousands of miles in 1967, to give his friend a beer and messages from home, in the middle of the Vietnam War.

Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, on the other hand, starred Crowe as Maximum Decimus Meridius, an Ancient Roman General, who was turned into a slave and then ultimately, turned into a gladiator, whose job it was to overthrow a mad emperor, played by Joaquin Phoenix, to restore a republic.

Have you spotted him yet?
