New film in Malta directed by Ridley Scott

Ridley Scott, director of huge blockbusters such as Blade Runner, Gladiator and most recently, the House of Gucci, will be heading over to Malta in early 2022 to film a brand new movie, called Kitbag.

Kitbag is a biopic movie, which revolves around French military leader Napoleon Bonaparte. It will be filmed primarily in Malta, as well as in France and the UK and stars Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon and Vanessa Kirby as his wife, Josephine. A few months ago, Polish cinematographer Dariusz Adam Wolski, known for his stunning work on the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, posted on social media that he was in Malta for location scouting.

If the pair sound familiar, that may be because Scott and Wolski have worked together before, on The Martian and Prometheus. Similarly, Phoenix and Scott have also teamed up before, for the 2000 epic Gladiator.

“Napoleon is a man I’ve always been fascinated by,” said Ridley Scott. “He came out of nowhere to rule everything – but all the while he was waging a romantic war with his adulterous wife, Josephine. He conquered the world to try to win her love and when he couldn’t, he conquered it to destroy her, and destroyed himself in the process,” he added.

The director said that he’s working on a film about Napoleon, which is starting with a snowball fight in Corsica, a French territory. “I want Napoleon as a young boy to put a stone inside a snowball because he’s losing the fight to other boys in his military school. He fights dirty. So, I draw that out. It fits the location I’ve already found in Malta, a fantastic Napoleonic courtyard,” he said.
