Malta Spring Festival Returns This Week

This Tuesday 19 April sees the welcome return of the Malta Spring Festival, an innovative event which each year features a different theme exploring both established historical works and modern compositions

Founded in 2005 by Artistic Director Karl Fiorini, the Malta Spring Festival presents listeners with a unique experience designed to inspire, inform, explore and entertain. This year’s 16th edition of the festival, beginning Tuesday 19 April and running until Saturday 23 April, presents a series of engaging concerts across various venues in Valletta, comprising both music and dance performances.

The festival opens on 19 April with a concert by the Germany-based vocal ensemble, Vox Nostra (“Our Voice”) at St Paul’s Cathedral in Valletta, before continuing on 20th April with a recital by the noted Maltese pianist, Charlene Farrugia, at Teatru Manoel.

Thursday 21 April sees the London-based Klein String Trio present a programme of modern compositions at the Museum of Archeology, as well as a contemporary dance performance entitled Muse and Madness later in the evening at the Ballroom Casino Maltese.

On Friday 22 April, the Messiaen Quartet Copenhagen will perform a programme of pieces by Steingrimur Rohloff and Olivier Messiaen, before the festival is concluded on Saturday 23 April with a concert by the Novarte Ensemble at the city’s Manoel Theatre.

In addition to these, the festival also features a series of ‘Rising Stars’ lunchtime concerts, taking place every day at 12:30 at the Malta Society of Arts in Valletta.

With contemporary works often taking a backseat to more established repertoire, the Malta Spring Festival represents a unique and high-quality opportunity to experience thought-provoking and enjoyable performances from a host of local and international stars, and is an event certainly worth exploring.
