Maltese Metal Band Haine To Represent Malta At Wacken Open Air 2026

From a rehearsal room in Malta to the stages of the world’s largest heavy metal festival, Maltese modern death metal band Haine has secured the opportunity of a lifetime.

Following victory at the Wacken Metal Battle Malta 2026 National Final, Haine will travel to Germany this summer to represent Malta at Wacken Open Air, a festival widely regarded as the pinnacle of the international heavy music scene.

For many musicians within the metal community, Wacken Open Air is more than a festival. It is a landmark institution known as “the holy land”. Every year, tens of thousands of fans from across the globe descend upon the small German village of Wacken for a celebration of heavy music unlike any other. The festival has hosted some of the biggest names in metal history and remains one of the most respected stages in the world for emerging and established artists alike.

For the members of Haine, the opportunity is difficult to describe.

“Like countless musicians around the world, we grew up watching videos of bands performing at Wacken and imagining what it would be like to stand on those stages ourselves. To now be preparing for that experience is both surreal and humbling.”

The journey to Germany began at Wacken Metal Battle Malta, a competition which has become one of the most important opportunities available to local heavy music artists.

The event brought together eight Maltese bands, all competing for a single place at the international finals. Throughout the evening, bands representing different styles and approaches to heavy music took to the stage before a packed audience and an international judging panel made up of ten experienced professionals from across the music industry.

For Haine, preparation for the competition began weeks before the event itself.

The band dedicated significant time to refining every aspect of the performance, from stage presentation and transitions to song selection and technical execution. Discussions surrounding the final setlist became a major focus, with members carefully evaluating how best to present the band’s identity within the limited time available.

Ultimately, the performance featured Hate.Illuminate, Blood Moon, Contaminated and Insentient; songs that collectively showcase the band’s approach to modern heavy music.

The atmosphere throughout the competition reflected the strength and passion of Malta’s metal community. Musicians, organisers, supporters and industry professionals shared the same space, creating opportunities not only for competition but also for collaboration, networking and cultural exchange.

“While playing, it was one of those moments that makes you stop and appreciate how much support exists around you. We spend so much time focusing on rehearsals, writing music and planning the next step that sometimes it’s easy to forget how many people are genuinely invested in the journey.”

Following deliberation by the judging panel, Haine was announced as the winner of Wacken Metal Battle Malta 2026.

The result means that Malta will once again be represented on one of the world’s most prestigious heavy music stages.
