Can a line be drawn between fact, fiction or hearsay? What constitutes information or formation? How does once differentiate between knowledge, wisdom or awareness; or between change and development? Is it true that dreams cast a light on reality, or that one can dream while awake? After all is it true that ‘there a hidden corner in our mind in which we stack all the yearnings and wishes which society does not permit us to actuate’? Are we witnessing the withering of our mother-tongue as we prostrate ourselves in front of the Mal-glish demi-god?
These are some of the themes which Dwal Godda theatre group exposes in its next two-act production: ‘Lubiena’ (text by Martin Gauci). This drama production is rooted within environment where Gorg and Lina have their bedroom/s overlooking Matt’s Cafe; and follows the dynamics of the interaction between them and their siblings, neighbours and a mysterious character: id-Dott. Who is in control of the situations that develop?
The aim is not to provide answers. But the questions are put in a theatrical ambience so as to instigate the audience to delve in a search for answers for itself; and where answers are shrouded in life’s mystery, to learn how to live with these questions. When all is said and done, one may have to choose to live life as it comes or as a tragic-comedy or as a comic-tragedy. Sometimes we are so ‘Lubiena’ (hazed between sleep and awakeness) that we are rendered numb not aware why, by what or whom.
Since 1970, DWAL GODDA theatre group has been striving to bring theatre towards those who do not feel ‘at home’ within the formal conventional or mainstream theatrical ambiences. Thus, this production is free of charge for all, and the success of this and the group’s next productions of the group will depend on the generous donations of the audiences at the door. With this in mind, the group has devised this production for small audiences to enhance the community spirit with which the group is imbued.
Each performance can be followed by a discussion regarding the above questions (and more) over a glass of wine and some nibbles. Thus, the joy of theatre and life is shared. That is what art is all about, giving all one has so as the body and soul feel so ‘full of life’ (Anton Chekhov).
Production is free of charge. For more information, visit their Facebook page.
