Whilst doing research for my new book, The Taste of Joy: Mediterranean Wisdom For a Life Worth Savoring, the OhMyMalta team was fortunate to go to the Corradino Correctional Facility last year and see how the bread was made by the inmates and officers. Interestingly, the prisoners make more bread per week than any other bakery in Malta.
It is estimated that weekly, more than 2,000 Maltese loaves, 4,000 buns and over 1,000 French sliced loves are made in the facility. Having the opportunity to visit was an amazing experience and one that I will cherish.
During the week of Good Friday leading up to Easter, they open their doors to the public and sell their bread and baked goods including traditional Easter foods from a kiosk right outside the prison. I was told that the line forms around the block to buy the best bread on the island and today I got to find out why! These breads and sweets are incredible!
