Heritage Malta Celebrates 20th Anniversary This Weekend with Special Open Days

As the national agency for museums, conservation practice and cultural heritage, Heritage Malta will be celebrating 20 years of operations this weekend.  The two open day events are free of charge and jam-packed with activities for the whole family.

From forts to catacombs, Heritage Malta has managed up to 90 museums, landmarks and even underwater sites throughout its two decade run. On Saturday 30 September, the agency will be opening its doors to the public free of charge. That’s right, no pre-booking, no membership. Heritage Malta is giving everybody access to all of its museums and sites, aside from the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, Underground Valletta and all other sites which are currently closed. All you have to bring is yourself – just make sure you do so during regular opening hours.

The next day, head over to Heritage Malta’s headquarters in Bighi (Kalkara) from 10am to 6pm for better insight into how the agency is run and preserved using modern technology. Visitors will get to meet agency employees and field experts, as well as observe conservators, tradesmen and scientists in their very labs. Children can enjoy specially designed tours in the agency’s Diagnostic Science Labs (available at 10am, 12pm, and 2pm), which are free but require online booking. Meanwhile, there will be stalls with food and beverages, and history buffs can even check out a variety of Heritage Malta’s publications.

And it doesn’t end there, Heritage Malta passports will be given out to students and seniors alike, which offer free unlimited access to all sites and museums. Heritage Malta memberships will also be available for purchase, but you can also win one! If you have a decent camera, an eye for creativity and maybe a bit of luck, you might want to enter their photo competition. All you have to do is snap a photo “themed around the number 20” and simply share it with #HM20. You can read all about the benefits on their website. Good luck!

So, if you can spare a moment this weekend, make sure to check out at least one of Heritage Malta’s numerous historical sites and join in the celebrations. After all, it’s on the house.
