Maltese Tragicomedy ‘Xi Traġedja!’ returns to Café Riche this Sunday

‘Xi Traġedja!’ is a Maltese stage production inspired by the dramas of Ancient Greece. Following a successful run back in August, the play is coming back for one more show this Sunday at Café Riche in Birgu.

Directed by Lee-N Abela, the play tells the story of Ġużi Mallia’s mysterious death, as well as his dying wish to have his testament and will read on his family’s property. His oldest and youngest sons (Jacob Piccinino and Miguel Formosa) unite with their mother Mary (Lee-N Abela) to hear the will, triggering a grippingly suspenseful set of events.

The four original cast members, Jacob Piccinino, Miguel Formosa, Lee-N Abela, and Brandon Terribile, will be reprising their roles. Having been praised for their comedic timing and physical acting, each actor takes on at least three roles.

The play’s Greek influences are evident in its blend of comedy and tragedy (making it a tragicomedy), as well as its use of a chorus, which is entirely composed of three old Maltese men according to cast member Miguel Formosa. However, its carefully interwoven socio-political themes are certainly Maltese, complimenting rather than clashing with the unconventional humour.

‘Xi Traġedja!’ has been hailed as a gem of Maltese theatre by previous audiences, both in and out of the theatre industry. It’s a low-budget production, but the cast certainly make the most of Café Riche’s space, which when combined with the script (written by Jacob Piccinino) is enough to captivate the audience.

The play starts at 6pm and lasts an hour, one which flies by according to actor Manuel Baldacchino.

Tickets are only available to people aged 12+ and can be bought here.
