Exhibit exploring Motherhood opening this month at Spazju Kreattiv

From 27 October to 3 December, Spazju Kreattiv will be hosting an thought-provoking exhibition by artist Rebecca Bonaci. ĠUF, the maltese word for “womb”, is a project taking a look at motherhood in the modern age whilst celebrating it. The concept of a mother will be delved into from the lens of culture, philosophy, and psychology, via the medium of visual art.

To this day, many people think of the mother as the most essential person in a child’s life. But, how does society treat mothers today? Whether we appreciate their efforts in terms of bringing up their kids is merely the tip of the iceberg. ĠUF seeks to explore women’s social position in a culture that expects them to have children as a natural next step in their lives, whilst also telling them to prioritise their careers and bodies in the name of social advancement. In a world where women are told to regain their beauty, this exhibition seeks to spotlight the mother in all her beauty.

The perception of womanhood and by proxy motherhood has evolved throughout the years. Along with her curating team led by Sarah Chircop, Bonaci will be examining iconography, imagery and other artefacts from the prehistoric era in Malta. She will also be touching on her own personal experiences, thereby creating a contrast between the mother’s social position in the past and in the present.

Spazju Kreattiv is located in Valletta close to Auberge de Castille. It opens from Tuesday to Friday from 9am to 9pm, Saturdays & Sundays from 10am – 9pm

Entrance is free of charge!
