Maltese Adaptation of acclaimed play ‘Lovesong’ coming to Theatre Next Door
This month, follow one couple’s 40-year journey in 75 minutes at Theatre Next Door.
Directed by Simone Spiteri, ‘Lovesong: L-Għanja tan-Namra’ is a Maltese adaptation of the play ‘Lovesong’ by Welsh playwright Abi Morgan. The play tells the story of Maggie and Billy’s 40-year marriage, in an intriguing alternating style that takes the audience back and forth between the past and the present.
Even after a long time has passed, their past continues to influence their present. Any long-term relationship is built on a foundation of youthful love, yet the everyday obstacles life throws at us can both deepen and weaken a relationship. The play rewinds to the pivotal times they had early in their relationship as the couple’s story develops.
This Maltese version is being produced by FM Theatre Productions, chronicling the couple’s personal journey as both them and their relationship age. The characters of Billy and Maggie, who audiences will come to know as William and Margaret, are portrayed at various stages of their relationship, and thus will be played by two different pairs of actors. Seasoned stage and film performers Josette Ciappara and Marceline Galea play the younger version of the couple, while Mark Mifsud and Lino Mintoff play the older version.
Choreographer Moritz Zavan Stoeckle uses emotional movement to weave the past and present together throughout the production, which is peppered with unique music composed by Chris Galea. Significantly, this play will be Mintoff’s return to the stage after an 18-year absence.
‘Lovesong: L-Għanja tan-Namra’ will be performed at Theatre Next Door from February 16 to 24. Translated by the director herself, the play will of course be performed in Maltese, although English surtitles will be provided on February 18 and 24. This production enjoys the support of Arts Council Malta.
