Former Rugby Star Louis Rees-Zammit Embraces NFL Training Camp Experience

Louis Rees-Zammit, the former Wales rugby player who happens to be half Maltese, is thoroughly enjoying his transition to the NFL through the international player pathway (IPP) after his decision to leave rugby in January shocked many.

At 23, he’s embarked on a 10-week programme in Florida, aiming to secure a spot on an American football team in 2024 and even dreaming of becoming a Super Bowl champion within five years.

Expressing his excitement, Rees-Zammit said, “My pursuit to be in the NFL is alive, and I am eager to discover what the next 10 weeks have in store.”

Reflecting on the challenges, Rees-Zammit highlighted the intense learning curve. “The most challenging thing is how much you have to learn,” he shared. “Training is completely different… even the soreness is different.”

Despite the difficulties, he’s relishing the opportunity to immerse himself in a new sport, eagerly absorbing everything from rules to positions.

Leaving rugby behind was a tough decision, but Rees-Zammit believes it was the right one. “It was always something I wanted to do… I thought it was the right decision,” he explained. He sees this moment as a chance to pursue his childhood dream while still young, with the option to return to rugby if needed.

“I am excited to see what happens and what the future holds.”
