Malta Public Transport Launches 30 Brand New Buses

Malta Public Transport has invested €8 million in 30 new buses to boost service reliability and meet rising demand for public transportation. This addition expands the fleet to 500 units, solidifying Malta’s reputation as a top European country for transport accessibility.

Passenger numbers surged by 19% in Q1 2024 compared to the previous year, totalling 17.2 million passengers. Tallinja cardholders increased by 19% from 188,000 to 224,000, signalling growing public transport usage.

Felipe Cosmen, Chairman of Malta Public Transport, emphasised the company’s dedication to passenger needs, citing feedback from drivers and riders for more space on buses as a driving factor behind the investment.

Recent improvements to the Tallinja App, offering real-time bus tracking and service alerts, received positive feedback. The new buses feature Euro 6 diesel technology, USB chargers, and free WiFi, prioritising passenger comfort and safety.

While investing in diesel buses addresses immediate needs, the company remains committed to sustainability. Plans include introducing 120 fully electric zero-emission buses by 2025, supported by European Resilience and Recovery Funds.

With support from the government and the Authority for Transport in Malta, Malta Public Transport aims to shape the future of public transportation through continued investment, sustainability efforts, and a focus on customer satisfaction, providing a safe, reliable, and eco-friendly transport solution for the community.
