Meghan’s great-great-grandmother, Mary Bird, was born in Malta in the mid-19th century. Mary was the daughter of Thomas Bird, a private in the 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment, who lived with his Irish wife in a garrison on the island, then a British colony. Intrigued by her Maltese ancestry, Meghan traveled to Malta in 2015 to trace her heritage.

She expressed a deep connection to Malta, describing it as feeling like home. As a food enthusiast, she particularly enjoyed the fresh goat’s milk cheeses, especially the pickled varieties with black pepper that she sampled on Gozo. She also praised traditional dishes like spaghetti with rabbit and pastizzi (pastries) filled with peas and ricotta.

Meghan’s stay in Malta was marked by her efforts to blend in with the local customs. She wore the għonnella, a traditional headdress and participated in local activities, emphasising her desire to understand her ancestry and identity. This journey was part of her broader exploration of her heritage, which she has continued to share with the public.
