Malta-Filmed Classic Popeye to Screen Outdoors in Valletta This June

On Sunday, 22 June, Popeye returns to Malta in a special outdoor screening at Laparelli Gardens, Valletta, from 8:30pm to 11:00pm.

The 1980 musical comedy, directed by Robert Altman, features Robin Williams in his film debut as the iconic sailor, alongside Shelley Duvall as Olive Oyl. The film was shot entirely in Malta, with the village of Sweethaven built at Anchor Bay specifically for the production. That same film set still stands today as Popeye Village, one of Malta’s most well-known and visited attractions.

Screening the film at Laparelli Gardens, set just outside Valletta’s historic City Gate, offers a rare opportunity to experience Popeye in the very country where it was made. With sweeping views, centuries-old bastions, and a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere, it’s the perfect location for an evening of open-air cinema.

Whether you remember Popeye from childhood or are discovering it for the first time, the film’s mix of physical comedy, quirky charm, and musical energy makes it a timeless crowd-pleaser. This screening is open to all and is an ideal summer night out for families, tourists, and film lovers alike.
