Huge cleanup of Majjistral Park sees 800kg of waste collected
A jaw-dropping 800kg of waste were collected during a clean up of a Natura 2000 area, just below the cliffs of Irdum id-Delli, in Majjistral Park.
Majjistral Park is a nature reserve in the Northern region of Malta, in Mellieħa and includes the coastal area from Golden Bay all the way to il-Prajjet and Xagħra l- Ħamra. Majjistral was declared a national park by the Maltese government back in 2007. It was named after the name for the northwest region or wind ‘majjistral’, in Maltese.
The natural landscape had long been used as an illegal dumping ground, with people driving in and simply dumping their waste off the side of the cliff, said the Park on their Facebook page. This practice has, of course, made clean ups challenging, due to access issues.

“Luckily, a number of people came to the rescue and we worked as a team to clear this area once and for all. Together (in very challenging weather) we managed to remove approximately 800kg of waste,” said the post.
Waste collected from the site included TV monitors, Playstations, CDs and DVDs, baby car seats, tyres, air conditioners, clothes, oil and rusted metals, amongst other things.
