Flamingo spotted wading at Għajn Tuffieħa

Many of us are familiar with stories relating to dolphins and even turtles found swimming in Malta’s coastal waters. This time, however, we have a story involving a flamingo!

Yesterday, people who were swimming and sunbathing at Għajn Tuffieħa bay, in the north of the island, spotted a fellow, yet somewhat unusual wader. The flamingo, which was caught on film, stopped by the bay for a cool dip, as temperatures reached over 40 degrees Celsius yesterday.

As you may expect, many were delighted to see such a rare sight and captured footage and photos of the bird.

In the wild, flamingos can live up to between 30 and 40 years. Greater Flamingos, which are the only flamingo species to be found within Europe, tend to appear in Malta either in singles or small flocks, though larger flocks have been seen flying overhead at times.
