New Fast Ferry Makes Island-Hopping in Malta Easier Than Ever

Getting around Malta has become easier with the launch of a new fast ferry route linking Sliema, Bugibba and Gozo, offering visitors a quicker and more scenic way to explore the islands.

The service, inaugurated by Prime Minister Robert Abela, forms part of the country’s expanding ‘Tallinja bil-Baħar’ (sea transport) network, aimed at improving connectivity between key coastal destinations. Services are operated by Gozo Highspeed.

The route is designed for efficiency and convenience:

  • 30 minutes between Sliema and Bugibba
  • 15-minute stop in Bugibba
  • A further 30 minutes from Bugibba to Gozo

This provides a practical alternative to travelling by road, particularly during busy periods, while also offering scenic coastal views.

Passengers can connect easily with existing ferry services operating from Valletta and Ċirkewwa, making multi-stop itineraries across Malta and Gozo more straightforward.

Although Malta offers free public transport for residents holding a personalised Tallinja card, this does not generally apply to tourists.

Visitors should expect to pay for ferry travel, with fares varying depending on the route.

The new route provides additional flexibility for those travelling to Gozo, Malta’s sister island known for its relaxed atmosphere, historic sites and natural landscapes.

Arrivals are via Mġarr Harbour, the island’s main gateway, with connections to local bus services and onward travel.

To improve the overall experience, a circular bus route in Bugibba has been introduced to align with ferry schedules, helping visitors transfer more easily between sea and land transport.
