€5.8 million raised for charity on Boxing Day

That’s right, everyone! A total of €5,845,000 was collected during the 26th edition of the annual telethon L-Istrina, which took place yesterday.

L-Istrina, the 12-hour marathon in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund (MCCF), started at noon and was held at the Kirkop Sports Pavillion. Donations were pouring in even after the transmission had ended at midnight.

The telethon has been held on Boxing Day in Malta for 26 years, with the first one being held in 1995. Donations made to L-Istrina are used to help people who require rare or expensive medical treatment to get the care they need.

The head of the MCCF and President of Malta George Vella could not be at the event this year, due to being in quarantine. Therefore, he kickstarted the telethon virtually, appealing for donations towards those in need and for unity.

“Let’s forget what divides us, unite through this marathon and contribute towards the victims of illnesses,” said the President.
