Open Day at Fort Manoel this Sunday to celebrate 300th Anniversary

This Sunday, October 22, the public will once again be able to witness the splendor of Fort Manoel in Gżira. This event comes as a celebration of 300 years since its creation in September 1723, as well as provides a special chance to observe the restoration work and take in the fort’s grandeur.

For some historical background; Fort Manoel was built by the Knights of St. John under the rule of Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, it was constructed to defend Valletta’s Northern Bastions. The fort has towered majestically over Marsamxett Harbour for generations, its extensive past includes being renamed HMS Phoenicia during the British era and acting as an adjunct of the Lazzaretto Hospital in the 1800s. Today, it stands as a testament to Malta’s baroque military architecture. In the early 2000’s, the fort was meticulously restored to its former  glory by MIDI, a project leading the rejuvenation of Manoel Island and Tigné Point.

If you want to know more, there will be guided tours all throughout the Open Day. Maltese tours will be held at 10:30 am and 2 pm, while English tours will be held at noon and 4 pm.
