Heading to the Carnival? Here’s the Weather for the Weekend Ahead
Carnival weekend in Malta and Gozo is one of the most anticipated events of the year, and this year’s weather looks set to add to the excitement. If you’re lucky enough to be visiting during this lively time, you’re in for a real treat.
Expect mostly sunny conditions on Friday with temperatures reaching a comfortable 18°C (around 19°C with the wind chill). It’s perfect weather for a wander through the streets of Valletta, Malta’s stunning capital, or the vibrant parades across Gozo. The sky may stay mostly clear, and the mild breeze will keep you refreshed while soaking up the atmosphere.
As the weekend progresses, Saturday and Sunday will bring a bit more cloud cover, but don’t worry, the temperatures will remain around 19°C, so it’s ideal for participating in the many Carnival festivities without overheating. You might encounter a light shower or two, but it’s nothing to dampen your spirits!
If you’re planning to explore Gozo’s celebrations or enjoy the charming villages, the weather will still allow for plenty of outdoor fun, as the rain should be short-lived. It’s always a good idea to carry a light jacket or an umbrella just in case, but you’re unlikely to need it for long.
Though, far from quiet in Gozo, if you are looking for a late night party with thousands of revellers, head to the village of Nadur. The famous Nadur spontaneous carnival is a truly unique and wild celebration! Unlike the more traditional, organised events, Nadur is all about impromptu fun. Locals and visitors alike dress up in elaborate, often eccentric costumes, and the streets come alive with spontaneous performances, music, and dancing well into the night. The atmosphere is infectious, and it’s not uncommon for everyone passing by to join in the madness, making it one of the most exciting and authentic Carnival experiences in the islands.
In Valletta, the Carnival celebrations are a feast for the eyes, with traditional costumes, music, and street food all around. The lively atmosphere will be perfect for a stroll through the city’s historic streets. You can watch dancers, singers, and performers fill the streets with colour, while delicious Maltese treats like pastizzi and qagħaq tal-għasel keep you energised throughout the day. The city’s landmarks, such as St John’s Co-Cathedral and the Upper Barrakka Gardens, provide amazing backdrops to the festivities, making for a truly magical experience.
Gozo, the smaller island to the north, offers a slightly more relaxed but equally exciting Carnival celebration. The parade in Victoria (Rabat) is a highlight, where costumes and floats bring the streets to life. The weather will be just right for exploring Gozo’s stunning countryside between events. Don’t miss the chance to take a boat trip or hike around the island to soak in the views – the cool temperatures will make it enjoyable, especially in the afternoon when the sun begins to dip lower.
Whether you’re in the heart of the action in Valletta or enjoying the charm of Gozo, this Carnival weekend promises to be a memorable one. With mild temperatures, a bit of cloud cover, and only a slight chance of rain, you can fully embrace the festivities without worrying about the weather. So, pack your most comfortable dancing shoes, your camera, and get ready for a fun-filled weekend!
