Different Minds Release Their Debut Album. And It's Been a Long Time Coming

After more than two decades of friendship, perseverance and music, Maltese band Different Minds have finally released their long-awaited debut album. Combining familiar favourites with brand-new tracks, Different Minds 2026 celebrates a dream realised and a remarkable journey that refused to end.

Some things are worth the wait. For Maltese band Different Minds, that’s putting it very mildly.

The band’s story stretches back to the late nineties, when they recorded their very first song, I Can Change. It sat unreleased for years before lead singer Robert G finally put it out in 2018, complete with an official music video. A slow burn, to say the least, but in many ways, that patience has defined everything about how Different Minds do things.

After a long spell apart, original members Robert G, Jason Mizzi, and Elton Abela came back together with the simple idea of enjoying music again. Casual meetups, a few rehearsals between old friends. It could have stayed at that. Instead, it grew into something much bigger, with new members joining the fold and the band finding a proper second wind. Original drummer Mario Gatt has since rejoined too, completing a line-up that feels as much like a great reunion as it does a band.

The warmth of this musical community has resonated deeply with the band’s newer additions, too. Reflecting on his journey with the group, guitarist George Mole shared: “I feel very blessed to be a part of the project, and lucky since moving to Malta for being accepted into the music scene here.”

The real turning point came in 2020, when Different Minds released their version of Across The Borderline, originally performed by Ray & The Characters and written by Ray Mercieca. It was an immediate hit, sitting at number one in the Maltese charts for two consecutive weeks. That type of response has a way of changing your plans. What followed was a run of original material Helping Hand, Different Not Less, and more, each one sharpening the band’s sound and sense of identity.

But the real goal, the one that had been sitting in the background all along, was an album. And on 23 June, that finally happened. Different Minds 2026 brings together eleven tracks, a mix of previously released material and six brand new songs. It’s available now from D’Amato Records in Valletta, Nappa Bar in Sliema, or via the band’s Facebook page.

Speaking to Oh My Malta, lead singer Robert G said “ Different Minds 2026 is far more than an album, it’s the sound of friendship, passion and a dream that refused to fade. After two decades, countless memories and incredible journey together we are proud to finally share this dream with you”

The band have also taken a moment to thank every musician and member who has contributed over the years, a nod to the fact that this has always been about more than just the music. It’s about friendship, shared history, and a stubbornness to keep going.

The current line-up: Robert G (vocals), George Mole (guitar), Robert Tomasolo “It-Toti” (guitar), Elton Abela (piano), Jason Mizzi (bass guitar), Mario Gatt (drums).

Different Minds 2026 marks a new chapter, but above all, it’s the fulfilment of a dream that started over twenty years ago. Not bad for a band that began with a song nobody heard for two decades!
