It’s International Cheeseburger Day! Here’s Where to Get the Best One in Malta
Thursday 18 September marks International Cheeseburger Day, and Malta’s burger scene has more than enough options to make the most of it. Whether you’re after something dripping in cheese, dressed up with parmesan, or given a real Japanese twist, here’s where to head.
Hugo's Burger Bar
This St Julian’s institution has built a cult following around its lineup. The Hugo’s burger comes loaded with melted provolone, onion, tomato, lettuce and their signature sauce, while Luke’s burger keeps things simpler with melted provolone cheese at the centre. If you want the cheese to do all the talking, Say Cheese is the one to order, built around melted red Leicester, fresh onions, gherkins and mustard. There’s also a classic cheeseburger on the menu for anyone who wants the basics done right, and with this many options, it’s easy to spend a while deciding. (Branches across the islands)
NOVI Burger
This popular burger joint in Gzira has earned a loyal following for its smash burgers and homemade American style. Their Cheezy burger goes big with four slices of cheese stacked on top of each other, while the Swiss burger keeps things a little more refined with melted Swiss cheese. Either way, expect a smash-style patty underneath. You’ll also find NOVI in Marsascala and Sliema.
Bodega
This brand new Mosta joint is a New York-inspired comfort food spot keeping things focused with a menu of just five burgers. From classic cheeseburgers to firm fan favourites, each one is built around premium ingredients, careful preparation and consistency. The philosophy is simple: perfect five burgers rather than serve 15 average ones. With a morning menu also on the way, there will soon be even more reason to make Bodega a regular food stop.
Hermanos Burgers
Malta’s homegrown chain with outlets from St Julian’s to Marsaskala, has two standout options worth knowing. The Spicy Sinaloa brings the heat with two beef patties, salami melted Mexican cheese, Edam cheese and their signature Buffalo sauce. Then there’s the Yuho, a limited seasonal creation made in collaboration with Wolt’s mascot: three beef patties, melted Edam cheese, crispy and grilled onions, tomato, lettuce and their Brother Sauce, all stacked in a soft brioche bun. It’s currently exclusive to Wolt, so if you want one, that’s the only way to order it. There’s plenty of other cheesy options on the menu too!
Last but not least, Ichiban in Sliema brings a Japanese spin to the whole affair with its cheesy wagyu burger, built on an in-house wagyu patty and finished with a generous layer of melted cheese.
However you like your cheeseburger, Malta’s got you covered!
