Mass event restrictions announced

In light of the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in Malta, the government has introduced a fresh set of measures.

The measures, announced by Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne at 7pm tonight, effectively limit the number of people in mass events.

The recent spike in cases have primarily been linked to a weekend-long party held two weeks ago, as well as the festa march of Santa Venera. However, the plot thickened when 85 migrants, who were brought to Malta, also tested positive for the virus over the last couple of days.

The following measures apply as of 8am tomorrow:

  • The number of people in every venue is limited to 1 person for every 4 square metres, to guarantee social distancing

  • Within the venue, groups of no more than 10 will be allowed

  • People who attend such events must leave their contact numbers to facilitate contact tracing

  • Event organisers will be responsible to ensure that these standards are met and risk legal action if they are not

  • Venues that allow for more than 100 people will have to carry out a risk assessment prior to the event taking place

  • All festa marches will be stopped

Chris Fearne, as well as Public Health Superintendent Charmaine Gauci lamented that inspectors will be ensuring that the standards are adhered to.
