Dar Bjorn fundraiser surpasses €1,000,000

A Dar Bjorn fundraiser, to build a second care home for those living with ALS and other neurodegenerative conditions, raised a whopping €1,436,955 on Sunday.

The first Dar Bjorn, in Qormi, was inaugurated in 2017, an initiative led by Bjorn Formosa.

Bjorn was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS, also known as motor neurone disease in 2015. The progressive nervous system disease affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing loss of muscle control.

Bjorn then dedicated his life to raising awareness on the challenges people living with ALS encounter. He founded the ALS Malta foundation and since then, over €5,000,000 have been collected and the first Dar Bjorn was opened.

Dar Bjorn aims to improve the quality of life is people with ALS, MS and other conditions by means of 24/7 nursing care and specialised treatments. Also, various services are offered including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology and many more, all of which is provided free of charge.

The cost of completing the second Dar Bjorn is €5,000,000 and so far, over €3,000,000 has been raised.
