For those of you out there who love the sea and are also passionate about history, we have something special.
On 14 July, Heritage Malta will be holding their fortifications harbour cruise. Participants will be given the opportunity to explore the various creeks around the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett in Valletta, such as the French Creek, the Marsa Creek and the Lazaretto. All this while admiring the fortifications dotting the area, built by the Knights of St John many centuries ago, and by the British before and during the Second World War. These include the oldest fortification within the Grand Harbour, which is called Fort St Angelo.
Other fortifications along the cruise’s itinerary include Fort St Elmo, Fort Ricasoli, Fort Manoel and Fort Tigne. Also, the fortification lines of Valletta and Floriana will also provide onlookers with a unique case study, to witness and understand the anatomy of bastioned fortifications. The British touch to these fortifications, between 1800 and 1979, will also be thoroughly explained on the cruise. In fact, all historical information during the tour will be provided by Matthew Balzan, principal curator.
