National football team’s goalkeeper signs to Hamrun Spartans

Henry Bonnello leaves Valletta FC to sign with Hamrun Spartans on a five year deal

The 32-year-old goalkeeper has joined Malta champions Hamrun Spartans as a replacement for Manuel Bartolo, who announced he would be leaving the club last week:

“Ok… being a captain, winning the BOV premier league and named as 1 of the best goalkeepers in Malta it’s not enough for Hamrun spartans president. I can officially say that I’m not part of Hamrun Spartans Football Club anymore. Thanks for these past 3 years, it was an honor playing for this club and having you as my supporters, you showed respect and for this I will keep you all in my heart, thanks to the coaches that worked with me and the committee that always did their best with me.”

Henry Bonello made his Premier League debut for Sliema Wanderers in season 2006/07. He spent one season on loan with Vittoriosa Stars in Division 1 in season 2009/10 and on his return, he took the number 1 shirt at the club. While at Sliema, he won the FA Trophy. Bonello joined Hibernians on loan in season 2014/15 with whom he won the title. The following season, he moved to Valletta on loan but eventually, the Citizens made his move a definite transfer.

Bonello also forms part of the national team squad and made his senior international debut for Malta on 29 February 2012.
