Commonwealth bronze won by local weightlifter

Superstar weightlifter Yazmin Zammit Stevens won a bronze medal in the Commonwealth category of her event, bringing home Malta’s second medal from the IWF World and Commonwealth Championships, being held in Uzbekistan.

Yazmin competed in the 64kg category, which proved to be one of the most competitive categories, with all of the lifters being supremely close to each other; within 1kg of each other. The weightlifter ended with a whopping 84kg in the snatch and 103kg in the clean jerk.

“We had a mission and we accomplished it… I’ll definitely want to share more about my experience and more soon but for now let’s just take this in,” she wrote on social media.

The athlete’s lifts were intricately planned by Coach Jesmond Caruana, enabling Yazmin to out-lift her rival from India, who was fighting with the Maltese for the bronze. She also beat lifters from other Commonwealth countries, including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and New Zealand, whilst also finishing ahead of athletes from Greece, the Philippines, Denmark and two Icelandic athletes.

Next summer, Commonwealth Games are set to take place in Birmingham in the UK, this making the IWF World and Commonwealth Championships an important qualification.

Congratulations, Yazmin!
