Teatru Mużikali: A New Docuseries on the history of Musical Theatre in Malta

A brand-new documentary series about the evolution of Malta’s musical theatre scene is coming to Maltese Television. ‘Teatru Mużikali: L-Istorja tal-Musicals f’Malta’ investigates the roots of Malta’s musical theatre scene, which have British and Italian influences, through a series of interviews.

The show takes viewers back to the 1980s and looks at the musical Ġensna, which ignited an interest in musical theatre among Maltese audiences. The rock opera, which was composed by Mro Paul Abela and written by Raymond Mahoney, caused a cultural revolution and made it possible to write and produce new Maltese musicals.

What’s more, the Iljieli Mediterranji festival always concluded with a brand new original Maltese musical. Mro Paul Abela is actually the mind behind quite a few of these well-known musicals, such as Bastilja, Ali Baba, and Taħt Tlett Saltniet. As did Mro Dominic Galea, whose works include Ulied in-Nanna Venut fl-America, Spiru Ċefai, and Manwel Manwel: Il-Bandiera tal-Maltin.

But what transpired following the last instalment of the Ijlieli Mediterranji Festival? The documentary delves into a time when Maltese musicals were losing their popularity and were replaced by foreign productions. That is, until the Maltese musical reappeared on a national level in 2017 and stayed there ever since.

In the documentary, five of Malta’s most well-known composers in musical theatre—Paul Abela, Dominic Galea, Kris Spiteri, The New Victorians, and Luke Saydon—discuss their experiences in the industry and provide viewers with information about the musicals they have written. It also features a roundtable made up of several culture experts from different fields who discuss their personal experiences and knowledge regarding working the industry.

Moreover, viewers are always in for a treat, as each episode is closed with a live rendition of a song from an original Maltese musical, performed by some of Malta’s most renowned artists.

Supported by the Arts Council Malta, Teatru Mużikali will air every Monday at 8:35 p.m. on ONE Television. Arts Council Malta is providing support for this project.
