Honouring 450 Years of Valletta's Sacra Infermeria

The Sacra Infermeria celebrates 450 years since its   founding and 45 years as a world-class venue, blending historic charm with modern functionality for conferences, cultural events and grand celebrations.

This year, the Sacra Infermeria, or as it is now popularly known, the Mediterranean Conference Centre proudly celebrates two significant milestones in its history.  It was in 1574 when Grand Master Jean de la Cassiere, together with the Malta Chapter General of the Order of St. John decided to construct a remarkable edifice that has stood the test of time, originally serving as a hospital dedicated to the care and healing of the community.    This architectural landmark has had a fascinating history during which it was subject to various transformations as it changed to accommodate the needs of the day.

Additionally, this year also marks the 45th anniversary of its evolution into a premier venue for international conferences, cultural events, banquets and exhibitions, welcoming visitors from around the world. This evolution from a place of physical healing to one of intellectual and cultural exchange illustrates the building’s ongoing commitment to nurturing the well-being of its visitors—this time through the exchange of ideas and fostering connections among people of diverse backgrounds.

Together these anniversaries not only highlight our rich heritage but also our commitment to innovation and service in the present and future.

The 16th century building now the Mediterranean Conference Centre has long been one of Valletta’s most remarkable landmarks.  Located towards the tip of Valletta’s peninsula, the MCC stands for distinction with magnificent views across the Grand Harbour.

In addition to conferences, the MCC offers one of the finest venues in the Mediterranean for a range of events including product launches, exhibitions, conventions, banquets, weddings and theatrical performances.

The Mediterranean Conference Centre is a rare example in the region of a heritage building functioning to the exacting demands of the 21st century.  It is also one of Europe’s largest conference centres within a historical building.

The Centre boasts of impressive spaces, such as the main auditorium, Republic Hall, seating 1,400, the elegant and unique La Valette Hall that offers an imposing banqueting venue for up to 900 as well as a host of individually-styled smaller halls.

At 155 metres in length, the Sacra Infermeria Hall is the main exhibition hall of the Centre. This magnificent Hall is also regularly used for banqueting functions accommodating up to 1,200 persons comfortably seated, or up to  2,400 for stand up cocktail receptions. It covers a total area of 1,700 square metres.

This hall was once the Long Ward of the ‘Sacra Infermeria’. It is one of the longest halls in Europe and was recognised as an architectural feat in the 16th century when it was constructed.

And now with the fabulous Grand Harbour Terrace, boasting a staggering 1063 square metres, you can get married or host a corporate event to breath-taking views of quite possibly the most iconic Maltese vista of all, Valletta’s Grand Harbour. Soak in the atmosphere at sunset, as the sky glows a majestic orange, all whilst celebrating your love and life. As far as outdoor event venues go, you just cannot beat it.
