A Different Side of the Sea, Visit Henry Falzon’s Latest Exhibition in Balzan

Malta isn’t short on sunshine and sea views, but if you’re after a change of pace, there’s a new exhibition making its mark. Tucked away in the village of Balzan, Gallery 23 is hosting the latest work by renowned Maltese artist Henry Falzon, and it’s all about seeing the sea in a completely different light.

Falzon might already be familiar to some, especially if you caught his earlier solo show a few years back. Since then, he’s been steadily building his name through various collaborations, and this new collection feels like a natural step progression. It’s called Henry & the Sea, and while that might sound summery, this isn’t the Malta you see on postcards.

Instead of bright skies and calm waters, Falzon turns his attention to the island’s winter coastline. It’s moodier and at times a bit wild. Locals will recognise these scenes instantly, but they’re shown from unusual angles, often from above, giving even familiar spots a slightly unexpected feel.

There’s something very striking about how the sea is portrayed here. Waves crash, tides shift, and the shoreline seems to constantly redraw itself. You can get a real sense of how small everything else is in comparison, especially the buildings clinging to the coast.

That contrast is part of what makes this exhibition so engaging. Malta’s seaside is often sold as sun-drenched and easy-going, but this collection leans into its more dramatic side. It feels honest, and at times a little reflective.

Alongside the seascapes, there are a few pieces that hint at Falzon trying something new. They stand out just enough to make you curious about where his work might head next.

If you’re planning a visit, the exhibition is currently open and runs through to 1 May. It’s open to the public on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings, though you can also arrange a private viewing if you’d prefer a quieter look around. It’s a good excuse to wander through Balzan and step into something a bit different, especially if you’re curious to see Malta’s coastline from a less familiar angle.
