Hello, June! What to Expect From Your Mediterranean Getaway This Week
Laguna Blu
Malta is officially entering its prime. June is that magical sweet spot where the island is fully alive for the summer, but the intense scorching heat of August hasn’t quite arrived yet. It’s the perfect time to explore, swim, and relax before the peak crowds land.
The weather this week is keeping things incredibly consistent. Aside from a few passing clouds last Monday and this Saturday, expect wall-to-wall sunshine. Daytime highs are hovering steadily around 31°C, but with the humidity, it will feel closer to 32°C. Light and variable breezes mean the sea will be calm, though you won’t get much of a cooling gust inland. The most important stat to watch is the UV index, which is spiking at 9 and 10. The Maltese sun does not play around this time of year, and unprotected skin can burn within minutes.
Thankfully, the swimming season is officially open and the Mediterranean has warmed up beautifully. Because the winds are staying light, the water will be crystal clear and relatively still, making it ideal for exploring Malta’s famous rocky beaches and sandy bays. To handle the high UV index, a good strategy is to skip the midday sun entirely. Hit the beach early in the morning before 11:00 or wait until after 16:00. The late afternoon light at spots like Golden Bay or the Blue Lagoon is stunning, and you’ll avoid the harshest rays.

When it comes to dressing for the week, keep it light, breathable, and practical. Linen shirts, loose cotton dresses, and shorts are perfect. You won’t need a jacket or jeans at all, even for late-night walks. For footwear, bring sturdy sandals or trainers for navigating the steep, shiny limestone streets of Valletta. You will also definitely want to pack a pair of reef shoes. Many of Malta’s best swimming spots, like St. Peter’s Pool or Għar Lapsi, are rocky, and these shoes will save your feet. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and plenty of high-SPF sunscreen.
This week’s conditions are absolutely ideal for getting out on the water. The light, variable winds mean smooth sailing and perfect snorkeling conditions for a boat trip to Comino’s Blue Lagoon or Crystal Lagoon. Because the daytime feels like 32°C, walking around historic towns in the afternoon can be draining. Instead, head to the ancient, walled city of Mdina around 18:00 to catch the golden hour light hitting the stone architecture during a cooler evening stroll. After, take advantage of those gorgeous 22°C nights by securing an outdoor table at a seafood restaurant in the fishing village of Marsaxlokk or sitting out on thet stepped streets of Valletta for dinner under the stars.
Stay hydrated, apply that sunscreen generously, and enjoy everything the islands have to offer this week!
