Malta Fish Fest returns to Marsaxlokk This Sunday
Marsaxlokk’s fishing heritage takes centre stage on Sunday 20 September, when the waterfront hosts an evening dedicated to the sea, local fishermen and the fish that make it from Malta’s waters to our plates. Expect food, demonstrations, boat trips, activities for all ages and plenty of entertainment along the harbour.
Taking place at the Fishermen’s Wharf between 6pm and 11pm, Malta Fish Fest is a chance to experience one of the island’s best-known fishing villages in a different light, while meeting some of the people who continue to make their living from the sea.
Food is naturally a big part of the evening. This year, the festival is putting the spotlight on several fish that are often overlooked, including Aċċol, Kubrit, Tumbrell, Sawrell and Ċinturin. Local chefs will demonstrate different ways of preparing these lesser-known catches, with visitors able to sample the results afterwards.

If you’re inspired to try your hand at cooking them yourself, fresh fish will be available to purchase from local fish hawkers. You can also take to the water, with boat trips leaving from Xatt is-Sajjieda throughout the evening.
There’s plenty to discover beyond the food, too. Exhibitions and information stands will explore Malta’s fishing industry, seafood and marine resources, with the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Aquatic Resources Malta and other organisations taking part.
Families can get involved with fishing-themed activities, including a dedicated children’s area and free mini fishing sessions – a good opportunity for younger visitors to find out what happens before the fish reaches the dinner table.
The evening will also include a presentation of trophies recognising local fishermen for their work and dedication. Meanwhile, live performances on the main stage, cultural stands and a BBQ area will keep things lively well into the evening.
